Hello and welcome to 2018. Not a lot has happened on the weather front for us on the Darling Downs in the last two months with only 23mm of rain recorded in December, and January going down in the books as a dry month.
We did manage to a good result with our Chick-Peas averaging one and a half tonnes to the acre on dry land, only to be beaten with a stick by the Indian Government and their 30% tariff.
January saw the annual running of the Junior Santa Gertrudis Camp in Warwick which was run over four extremely hot days. This is the first time that NIOA has been involved with this event but it won’t be our last.
We happily supplied three heifers and two young bulls for the school and came away with a Champion Heifer (GLEN OAKS MACEY M32(P) and Reserve Champion Bull (NIOA MARKSMAN M06(P) but the real winners were the young students who attended and gained valuable experience in all aspects of preparing and presenting cattle for the show ring as well as other key areas of the beef industry. This was no small event with well over a hundred young students in attendance. This was all made possible with the help and support from people within the Santa Society who not only gave their time but also shared their knowledge. A huge credit to all those involved.
Our local town of Allora held its annual Show over 9-10 February. We supported with a small team of three Heifers and a Junior Bull.
NIOA MARKSMAN(M06(P) went on to win Junior Champion Bull.
NIOA KIMBERLY (M10(P) was successful in her class and went on to win Junior and Grand Champion Santa Gertrudis Female as well as Champion Tropical Female.
GLENN OAKS MACEY (M32(P) was Reserve Senior Champion.
Special thanks to Pinedock Fitting Services (0400 387116) for preparing and exhibiting these cattle for us.
NIOA KIMBERLY’S Dam TALGAI ICE BABY I135(P) also had success at this Show in 2014 winning Junior and Grand Champion Female and again in 2015 with Senior and Grand Champion Female as well as Champion Tropical Female.
Until it rains again, safe travels and take care.
Shannon Gardner.
