The long-running success of the NIOA Big S sale continued on Thursday, when 36 Santa Gertrudis bulls and 22 females went under the hammer at Talgai Homestead, Allora.
Representing genetics from 11 studs, 30 bulls were sold for an average of $9766, while all 22 females sold for a $6681 average.
Topping the bull market at $23,000 was Rob and Eliza Nioa’s 24-month-old NIOA Quantum Leap Q30 (AI) (PP).
Knocked down to John and Kate McLoughlin, Millmerran, the son of Rosevale Jackaroo J566 (P) was out of one of NIOA’s most consistent breeding females, Riverslea Lucy L811 (P).
Weighing 846 kilograms, the sire prospect scanned 130 square centimetres for eye muscle area, 21mm and 13mm for P8 and rib fat, respectively, and 6.3 per cent for intramuscular fat.
Measuring 39cm in the scrotum, he had semen motility of 80pc and morphology of 93pc.
Four lots later, the McLoughlins found another new sire prospect they were determined to take home.
Paying the second-top price of $20,000, they secured NIOA Quarterback Q03 (P), again from the NIOA stable.
By Kuloomba Peter 444 (P) and out of Rosevale Anita M143 (P), the 30-month-old tipped the scales at 940kg, with an EMA of 155sq cm, IMF of 5.5pc and P8 and rib fat of 12mm and 8mm, respectively.
The McLoughlins rounded out their draft with a $15,000 bid for Rose Oak Prolific 130 from Tanya and Luke Hoare, Rose Oak stud, to see their three purchases average $19,333.
Demand kicked up a gear, as did bidding via AuctionsPlus, when it came to the female portion of the catalogue.
All but one of the 22 females were bought by New South Wales operators, with Kyogle-based Lindsay Park stud putting together a draft of 15, including the top priced Linlands 874 (P).
Offered by the Lindemann family, the 3.5-year-old daughter of Yarrawonga Donatello J850 (P) and Linlands C54 (P) was knocked down for $15,000.
She had a four-month-old bull calf at foot by Linlands O’Sullivan (P), and was considered by the Lindemann family to be an embryo prospect.
Lindsay Park also paid the second-top female price of $10,500 to secure NIOA Kib Q33 (AI) (P) from the Nioa family’s offering.
By Rosevale Jackaroo J566 (P) and out of Tookey Creek Kib, the 37-month-old had a heifer calf at foot by NIOA Quigley Q10 (ET) (AI) (PP).
Tregona Grazing, Meandarra, selected four bulls for an average of $7000, Inverclyde Cattle Co, Moonie, also selected four bulls to average $5250, and Apache Close Pastoral Co, South Gundurimba, NSW, selected one bull and three females to average $7250.
